The #OscarsSoWhite controversy has been nothing if not helpful when it comes to dividing celebrities into the categories of culturally sensitive and…well, clueless.
Actress Stacey Dash has been under fire since she appeared on Fox and Friends Jan. 20, where she said that both Black History Month and BET should be eliminated in order to achieve true racial integration.
And when the Associated Press recently asked Gabrielle Union what she thought of Dash’s comments, Union had the perfect response: “Who’s Stacey Dash?”
With a little context, Union figured it out: Dash is the “crazy lady” she’d heard about. (“I don’t know what her name is.”)
Dash previously responded to backlash over her Fox News appearance by asking for an apology from her opposition and sharing a video of Morgan Freeman.
“You want racial healing and reconciliation? You want true equality?” Dash wrote. “Stop. Talking. About. Race.”
Union disagrees. “If you don’t see yourself reflected in mainstream awards, you tend to create your own,” she said at Sundance, solidifying her support for the BET Awards, ALMA Awards, Country Music Awards and more. When TMZ asked her for further comment about Dash, Union noted that the real news was Nate Parker’s slave rebellion epic Birth of a Nation selling for a record-breaking $17.5 million at Sundance.
“The more that we focus on inclusion and a true representation of this country, I think that crazy lady will have less to say,” Union added.
