The New Cafe Fad Is Micro-Pigs

Japan has a plethora of animal-themed cafes, from cat cafes, dog cafes, owl cafes, hedgehog cafes, and even reptile cafes. It is nothing short of amazing and fun. But now, the country has gotten a brand-new animal café and includes a lot of tiny and adorable oinks.

After a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised 4.7 million yen (US $42,380) from supporters – more than twice its goal amount of 2 million yen –a new cafe dedicated to micro pigs has set up shop.

The Mipig cafe, which opened on March 1, is located a 15-minute walk from Meguro Station. Part of the purpose of opening p the café was to educate the people about pigs. Unlike countries such as the UK and US, where pigs have become popular pets, in Japan pigs are still seen as livestock, so Mipig aims to help people become more familiar with the animal.

The cafe is being run by a joint company that breeds pigs on a farm in Yamanashi Prefecture after first importing micro pigs from the UK earlier this year. Micro or miniature pigs are a breed of pig much smaller than normal pigs, and they hail from the United Kingdom.

The pigs at Mipig are extra small because they’re babies and are able to grow to 40 kilograms.
