Kim Lands In Hot Water, Again
Kim Kardashian West has never been one to shy from controversy, but the Hollywood reality star has found herself in hot water for cultural appropriation. West has backed down over plans to launch a “Kimono”-branded lingerie line after the naming of the new range prompted a lot of backlash.
The star made a statement on Twitter and Instagram saying, ” My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name. I will be in touch soon. Thank you for your understanding and support always.”
Originally, Kimono launched on June 25 and is a line of flesh-colored shapewear. However, people of Japanese heritage around the world expressed their disapproval using the Twitter hashtag #KimOhNo.
But that’s not all; according to a report from Business Insider, West also appeared to have trademarked the word “kimono.”
The kimono is a traditional Japanese garment that has complex levels of meaning. Once considered a form of dress worn by everyone in Japan, the kimono has evolved into a fashion statement of the Japanese people. There are different types of kimono for different occasions and seasons, and there are even kimonos for men.
Other than those worn daily by some older people or performers of the traditional Japanese arts, nowadays kimono is a less common sight. However, they are still worn on special occasions such as weddings and graduation ceremonies.
