Nestle unveils new chocolate product without refined sugar
Rolling out a new chocolate bar in light of changing customer tastes and trends, Nestle introduced a new chocolate bar without added sugar. The Swiss company said that the new KitKat bar still gets its sweet flavor from a cocoa fruit, but without any added refined sugar. The bar is 70 percent dark chocolate that is made using the entire cacao fruit.
Part of the process is also using the pulp around the cacao bean, which is usually discarded. Nestle uses the pulp by it into a powder and adding it to chocolate as a sweetener in place of refined sugar.
According to the company, the powdered pulp is sweet due to its natural fructose. The company further claims the new chocolate has “no compromise on taste, texture, and quality.”
The KitKat will hit Japan first later this year before going on sale globally in 2020. Another reason why Nestle is making chocolate without refining sugar is that consumers are beginning to shy away from processed foods and sugars in an effort to be more health-conscious and healthy.
“Consumers are very concerned about the health characteristics of their food, and also of environmental and social impact, now more than ever,” Gustavo Setrini, an assistant professor of food studies at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, told CNN Business.
