‘Top Gun’ Returns For Sequel

Tom Cruise steps back in action to flip the engines for “Top Gun: Maverick.” The new trailer was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con during a Paramount panel. The film is slated to be released in theaters June 28, 2020. Cruise stars alongside Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Jon Hamm in the film directed by Joseph Kosinski.

Greeted by a cheering crowd of con-goers, Cruise said, “Thirty-four years ago, I made a movie in San Diego. And you’ve all asked for many years, when are you going to do another one?”

Cruise calls “Top Gun: Maverick” a love letter to aviation, and he revealed that filmmakers and crew worked with the Navy to produce the movie in an effort to give audiences an all-around authentic experience on what it’s like to be in an aircraft.

The 1986 film “Top Gun” focused on risk-taking pilot Maverick and his family-oriented wingman, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). Although their relationship took a tragic turn (no spoilers if you haven’t seen the first movie), the follow-up brings Maverick and Goose’s son, who is all grown up, together.

The new movie also seeks to be more diverse, with a female fighter pilot entering the scene to bust the boys club. Additionally, it seems like Maverick will get a new love interest.
