Okay, real talk: have you ever witnessed a meme’s creation? Like, first hand? A lot of memes tend to crop up on image boards or result from social media posts, so either you miss the creation of the meme wholesale, or you’ve seen its point of origin but are already behind once the meme-ing proper has begun.

In my life, I’ve only ever seen a meme born once. It was about a year ago; I was scrolling through Tumblr, and I saw this weird picture of a fat cat with the word “BODE” written across its tummy in block letters. According to the original poster, this came to them in a dream; fat cats with the word “BODE.” It was bizarre, but sure enough, it took off. For about a week, at least once a day, there was a BODE cat on my dashboard, and a couple of weeks later, there was a Know Your Meme entry. Sadly, a couple more weeks later, it was already old news, but regardless, it fascinating. I actually witnessed a meme’s entire lifespan, from birth to death. It was like, life affirming or something. Maybe if you’re quick enough on the draw, you can witness a meme’s genesis for yourself. I just hope it’s a harmless cat meme like BODE, and not something gross and offensive. So, I guess you got about a one-in-three shot on that front.
