Ultra May Stay In South Florida After All
After a not so hot weekend for its first year in Virginia Beach, Ultra is looking for a new home for 2020, and the latest consideration is Lummus Park in South Beach. A Miami Beach commissioner wants to see the festival move to South Beach, thus an official discussion to possibly bring the festival to South Beach is set for this Wednesday, May 22nd.
“An adequate public safety, transportation, and noise mitigation plan [will] be provided,” City Commissioner Ricky Arriola said. “Inviting an established, well-organized event like Ultra for spring break 2020 will put heads in beds and serves as the counter-programming mechanism against the unorganized chaos that was spring break 2019 on Miami Beach.”
Ultra had relocated to Virginia Beach this year because the festival terminated its license with the City of Miami. Prior to relocating, Bayfront Park residents complained about the out-of-control party atmosphere, public fights during spring break and the noise levels.
Originally erected in 1999 as an unofficial Winter Music Conference satellite event, the 11-hour beachside rave attracted thousands of people. From there, the festival went on to see much success, growing into an iconic event in South Florida’s music scene, drawing more than 55,000 people this year alone, and spawning other festivals across the world.
2020 will be the first year Ultra won’t be held in Miami in 21 years.
