This new high school is giving major mall vibes, literally
One high school in Vermont is teaching students on a unique temporary campus located in an old Macy’s department store. The department store converted into a makeshift high school in Burlington, Vermont following the closure of the old school building due to concerns of chemical contamination.

The closure of the Burlington High School led to the solution of using a preexisting infrastructure of a department store for the new “Downtown BHS” school that still resembles a department store. The first day at the new makeshift school was on March 4 with one student, Miranda Ljung-Baruth, posting videos and photos of the new department store campus.
The campus still features old brand signs around the store with centrally located escalators that students use to get around classrooms located in different sections of the stores. Some sections of the department store were renovated to better suit the needs of the school including the fitting rooms converted into bathrooms for the students.

The conversion of the department store into a school required 10 weeks with a budget of $10 million following the old school closing in September. The high school plans to use this temporary Macy’s location for up to three years as they develop plans on building a new school or renovating the old one if possible.
The remaining structure was also utilized by the school including old merchandise shelves used to house the library books. The students are getting used to
