AMC celebrates 100 year anniversary with 15-cent tickets
The world’s largest movie theater chain, AMC, is finally reopening its theaters on August 20, and guests will only need to pay 15 cents to get in, according to the company on Tuesday. More than 100 U.S. theaters will welcome back moviegoers, and to commemorate the occasion, AMC is offering “movies in 2020 at 1920 prices” on opening day.
Back in March, AMC closed all of its theaters in the United States as the novel coronavirus began to spread rapidly, and the company’s reopening has been delayed several times (track how box-office sales have been hit on our recovery dashboard).
The opening comes in time for Christopher Nolan’s thriller “Tenet, which will is scheduled to hit theaters on September 3. AMC’s other U.S. theaters will open “only after authorized to do so by state and local officials,” according to the company’s statement.
With its opening comes newly implemented new safety and health measures to help keep moviegoers safe and curb the spread of coronavirus. All guests will be required to wear masks, and theater capacity will be decreased while and ventilation systems will be upgraded.
AMC plans on bringing back old films since the box office has come at a standstill due to so many new movies that have been delayed this year. As a result, films like “Inception,” “Black Panther,” “Back to the Future” and “The Empire Strikes Back” will only cost $5.
AMC Theaters was originally founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1920. To bring back the good ol’ days (or in this case the good ol’ prices) the movie theater chain is also offering discounts on concessions like popcorn for $5. The promotion will run through the end of October.
“We are thrilled to once again open our doors to American moviegoers who are looking for an opportunity to get out of their houses and apartments and escape into the magic of the movies,” Adam Aron, AMC’s CEO, said in a statement on Thursday.
