This mockumentary features real news footage from the last year with a unique narrative from key figures played by the comedy actors including: a reporter (played by Samuel L. Jackson), a behavioral psychologist (played by Leslie Jones), a history professor (played by Hugh Grant), a “gig economy millennial” (played Joe Keery), a tech CEO (played by Kumail Nanjiani), an average citizen (played by Diane Morgan), a soccer mom (played by Cristin Milioti), a scientist (played by Samson Kayo), and Queen Elizabeth (played by Tracey Ullman). The creators of “Black Mirror” wanted to create “Death To 2020” to bring much-needed joy after living nearly a year in a pandemic but doesn’t exist in the “Black Mirror” universe.

“Death To 2020” brings the unique narrative of the developed characters reliving pivotal moments of 2020 including the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, spreading awareness for the Black Lives Matter movement, the rise of TikTok, the historic “Parasite” Oscars wins, Brexit, #Megxit, and more. Brooker and Jones muse how 2020 might change the future of how they tell stores in the near future.

As the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the world, Brooker and Jones decided to commit the project to a COVID-19 era production constraints that would best summarize 2020. Each of the participating commentary actors filmed a standalone interview in one day for a 10-day shoot spanning across Los Angeles and London at the end of November.
