Lady Bug Are Coming… In Droves
Summer is definitely coming full force to California this year as a swarm of millions of ladybugs took to the sky this week to hunt for aphids. Radar from the National Weather Service captured the massive blob, showing that the insect swarm spanned 80 miles by 80 miles.
The storm of ladybugs centered around the town of Hesperia, more than 70 miles east of Los Angeles, and upon confirming that the giant blob was just a swarm of insects, the NWS posted the radar footage on Twitter. The post received more than 1,000 retweets and generated many different and funny comments.
Ladybugs, aka ladybird beetles, are important insects to gardeners because they feed on aphids, spider mites, and mealy bugs.
The swarm is said to be caused by rising temperatures in the mountainous that triggered a mass migration. Once in the sky, the ladybugs rely on the winds to carry them to the valleys where there is an abundant amount of food to eat. The unlucky bugs end up in the desserts, which causes them to die.
Other animals that routinely migrate are birds, bats and other types of insects, and they are normally also captured on radar by the National Weather Service.
