Many big fans of Disney know the creative engineers as the Imagineers, other employees have a group that donates volunteer time in a special way.
The Blanketeer VoluntEARs of Disney are cast members that crochet, knit, and sew in their spare time. Did I forget to mention they donate their creations to charity? One year the program donated over 150 caps and blankets for hospitals in the Orlando area during the holiday season.
The creator of the Blanketeers was cast member, Kelly Ann Atalek, who saw inspiration from a similar group in California. They also host meetings once a month to teach new techniques and for opportunities with donation projects.
Formed in 2007 with a group of Disney cast members who met once a week to knit caps for soldiers in service overseas. Over the years the group has grown to 80 Disney World cast members.
This program donates to hospitals and community organizations including: the Orlando Day Nursery, the Coalition for the Homeless, and the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, and the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The organization has donated over 2,800 items including blankets, bags, baby clothing items, hats, and animal beds.
