David Hasselhoff, the actor with one of the most beloved surnames in Hollywood, has just released a bizarre video in which he claims that he is changing his last name.
Instead of “David Hasselhoff,” he claims that he will now be going by “David Hoff.”
“I’ve been wanting to drop the ‘Hassel’ from my life for years,” he says in the video. “Now, I have made it official: David Hoff.”
The video was accompanied by the following tweet:

The video is clearly a hoax: It doesn’t take a genius to see that the certificate Hasselhoff holds up is phony, or that the lighting is a bit too professional to be a simple home video.
Hasselhoff’s rep confirmed this suspicion, telling Us Weekly, “It’s an excerpt from an ad campaign that launches in Australia this weekend. David is just having some fun and more will be revealed in the next 24 hours.”
Hasselhoff is definitely committing to the stunt, though, and has changed his last name to “Hoff” on his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Who knows? Maybe David will like the fake name change so much that he’ll make it real.
