Disney sure is making bank this year
“Frozen 2” has officially been named the company’s sixth film of 2019 that has raked in $1 billion at the box office. The animated sequel hit a milestone with a $74.9 million weekend at box offices worldwide, according to Comscore data. The film also made $666 million internationally and about $366.5 million domestically since its release last month over Thanksgiving.
In North America, the sequel generated $367 million, $111.5 million in China, $85.4 million in Korea, $67.3 million in Japan and $49.6 million in the United Kingdom.
Directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, “Frozen 2” is a continuation of the adventures of Princesses Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell). The two reunite with Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and Olaf (Josh Gad) to embark on a journey beyond Arendelle to find out why Elsa was born with magical powers.
Other billion-dollar movies of the year include “Aladdin,” “Toy Story 4,” “Captain Marvel,” “The Lion King” and “Avengers: Endgame,” which currently holds first place as being the highest-grossing film of 2019 with nearly $2.8 billion in worldwide.
And this is all before the Dec. 20 release of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” so think about how much that movie will pull in next week when it drops.
