LONDON — Hailo joined the marriage-equality debate in Ireland with a new video featuring a “heterophobic” taxi driver.
The cab service posted the video, which aims to “show just how ridiculous discrimination is,” on Tuesday, days before Ireland will vote on same-sex marriage.
In it, the cabbie subjects his passengers to a stream of jokes and comments at the expense of straight people.
“Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Why would you be marrying someone from another planet, you know?” he asks one passenger at the start.
“I have an uncle that’s straight, and I don’t talk to him that much,” the cabbie tells another.
“You’ve heard the saying Cain and Abel — it wasn’t Jane and Abel,” he adds.

Hailo says it is supporting marriage equality by offering free trips to polling stations between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on May 22 if people use the company’s pre-booking service. Hailo also unleashed a fleet of rainbow-coloured cars on the streets of Dublin.

Dozens of other companies have voiced their support for equal marriage, and signed up to the Business for Yes Equality campaign, including eBay, Twitter and Ben and Jerry’s.
