The First Competition Of It’s Kind

Are you a fan of both matcha and art? If so, you’re in luck because Japan is combining them for a unique new competition!

Latte art is an underappreciated art form. It takes a lot of barista skill, patience, and dedication to create everything from basic art to detailed mesmerizing art.

Coming up on May 23, green tea lattes will become the canvas for many baristas. A matcha latte art contest is the first of its kind to be held in Japan, has attracted about 40 baristas from all over the country and even Taiwan. A prior selection process whittles down the competition to 12, all of who will battle it out using every ounce of wit and skill in the actual event.

Other than a milk pitcher and a cup, no other accessories are allowed, meaning that baristas will have to rely on steady hands and lots of precision in what is known as free pouring.

The latte art will be scored based on visual appeal, precision, contrast, creativity, and difficulty.

From the 12 contestants, eight will be chosen to move forward, and from there, attendees hoping to get in on the action can pay an extra 1,000 yen on top of the 2,500 yen admission fee to help judge the various latte art during the finals, thus deciding the winner.
