This is a major feat for South Korea!

Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s satirical drama “Parasite” marked a new milestone for Korean cinema, becoming the first Korean film to win a major U.S. film award.

“Parasite” won the award for the best foreign-language film at the Golden Globes ceremony. The film previously won the top prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Now, with its winning streak, many are eager to see next month’s Oscars as the film has been short-listed for the best international feature film.

The Korean film beat out Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory,” LuLu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Ladj Ly’s “Les Miserables” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” by Celine Sciamma for the Golden Globes. However, “Parasite” did not win the best screenplay or best director, two other categories it was nominated for.

During his acceptance speech, Bong said through an interpreter, “I think we use only one language, the cinema. Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”

“Parasite” is being nominated for more categories in the upcoming Oscars. Aside from expecting to compete in the best international film category, the Korean movie is expected to be nominated for the best original song category as well.

The nominated will be announced next week.
