Learn how to make 'the best scrambled eggs in the world' with Ian McKellen

LONDON – If there’s one wizard who knows his way around a kitchen, it’s Ian McKellen.

The LOTR legend and Mr Holmes star recently took some time out from his busy schedule to give a Facebook cookery class on his all-time favourite breakfast – scrambled eggs.

“You’re lucky, because these are the best scrambled eggs in the world,” says McKellen in the clip, which was uploaded to his Facebook page on Thursday. “And like all good recipes it’s a family one – it comes from my stepmother, Gladys.”

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

“Live from Chateau Marmont in Hollywood,” I scramble up the best eggs in the world for my Facebook followers, to celebrate the success of my new film “Mr. Holmes”.

The cooking technique is definitely worth watching, but it’s McKellen’s wonderful commentary that really gives the video its spark.

“While you’re doing this you can listen to the radio, you can talk to your beloved – but mainly you can get your juices going because these eggs are going to be really delicious,” says McKellen while frantically stirring his mixture.

McKellen narrates everything he’s doing while cooking and includes as many tips and tricks as he can along the way. Holding up his saucepan, he explains: “It’s good to do them in a pan of this sort, rather than a frying pan – in a frying pan they’d cook too quickly.”

He’s also got some strong feelings about how toast should be kept warm once it comes out of the toaster.

“NEVER wrap up toast,” says McKellen, in a voice that borders on you-shall-not-pass levels, “because the water vapour will stay inside and the toast will become limp.”

Finally, the eggs are finished.

“You see how it’s steaming? Lovely,” says a triumphant McKellen, waving a slice of toast in front of the camera. “Cheers – and happy breakfast.”

Somebody give this man a cookery show ASAP.
