‘Magic Mike’ Heads For The Broadway Stage

“Magic Mike,” the seductive stripper saga, born as a film in 2012, is now the basis of a new stage musical that will have a first production in Boston starting this fall, producers announced Thursday.

The stage show is being called a prequel to the film — whereas the film told the story of an established stripper, Mike Lane, who trains a new recruit named Adam — the stage musical will tell the story of how Mike Lane became a stripper.

When “Magic Mike” came out, it created a bit of an empire. The 2012 film went on to spawn a sequel, “Magic Mike XXL,” and a nightclub show, “Magic Mike Live,” that began in Las Vegas and is now also running in London.

The upcoming Magic Mike stage musical will feature an original score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who won the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for “Next to Normal.” The producing team will be led by Channing Tatum, who starred in the films, as well as Steven Soderbergh, who directed the first film, Gregory Jacobs, who directed the second film, and Reid Carolin, who wrote the first film. Also on the production team are Nick Wechsler, who co-produced the films, and Peter Kiernan, who was Mr. Tatum’s manager before becoming a producing partner.

The musical is scheduled to run at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theater from Nov. 30 to Jan. 5.
