Moving university ad tells the powerful story of a refugee student

University advertising campaigns usually celebrate the institution’s green campus or gym facilities, but the Western Sydney University in Australia is taking a different tack.

Their latest ad features Sudanese man Deng Thiak Adut, who was taken from his mother at age six and made to fight in the People’s Liberation Army. Smuggled out of the country, Adut and his brother arrived as refugees in Australia in 1998. After teaching himself English, he enrolled at Western Sydney University and graduated with a degree in Law. He now works as a lawyer helping other refugees navigate the legal system.

As the refugee crisis unfolds in Europe and around the world, the video is not only an effective promo for a university, it’s an emotional reminder of the contribution our fellow humans can make to our communities, if given the chance.
