Selfies can hurt your social media…
Almost everyone in this day and age has an Instagram account, and chances are, you probably follow an influencer who every now and then, will post a flattering photo of themselves. Queue the double-tap to “heart” the photo.
You probably do the same because in all honesty, who doesn’t like posting a pretty photo or two of themselves, especially when it’s a fun and memorable event and you look sharp as heck. But if you thought your selfies were simply an easy way to show off when your makeup was on fleek or to capture the attention of a crush, think again.
A new study by Washington State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, published in the “Journal of Research in Personality,” suggests that posting selfies on Instagram makes people appear more insecure, less successful, less likable, and less open to new experiences.
In contrast, those who post “posies,” or photos of themselves taken by someone else, appeared more adventurous, less lonely, more dependable, more successful and more outgoing. They also appear to have higher levels of self-esteem and have the image of being a better friend.
The research suggests that certain visuals “elicit either a positive or negative response on social media.”
So, if you want your picture to appear more natural and “plandid,” skip the selfie and recruit that talented Instagram boyfriend or bestie to take your next photo.
