Trump thinks he can nuke a hurricane to stop it
President Donald Trump has come out denying that he suggested using nuclear weapons to halt hurricanes. However, reports state that he aired the idea in multiple conversations with national security officers.
In fact, one particular report says that it was recorded in a memo by National Security Council officials that Trump suggested bombing hurricanes.
In response to the reports, Trump tweeted: “Just returned to Washington from France and the very successful G-7, only to find that the Fake News is still trying to perpetuate the phony story that I wanted to use Nuclear weapons to blow up hurricanes before they reach shore.”
While the president’s statement may seem ludicrous to many, the idea of bombing hurricanes is not exactly a new idea. For years, scientists and officials have thought up ways to fight hurricanes and stop them in their tracks. In fact, during the 1960s and 1970s, it was a vibrant area of research, according to Phil Klotzbach, a tropical storm expert at Colorado State University.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said dropping a nuclear bomb into a hurricane would be “devastating” and might not even alter the course of the storm. It could, however, result in radioactive material being spread by the storm’s winds.
