Zoe Saldana Captivates Us in Guardians Vol. 2

American screenwriter James Gunn gives us a taste of what his thoughts are behind this action-filled scene from his latest film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in this New York Times Anatomy of a Scene

The scene includes Zoe Saldana’s character, Gamora, is being chased and attacked by her adopted sister Nebula. Pretty dark, huh? Well, Saldana plays well into her character’s powers by running from scattered bullets as debris flies around her. This Marvel character is known for her superhuman strength and incredible self-healing speeds.

Once she is finally cornered, she picks up a gun that is much larger than she is, and begins firing back at her adopted sister, Nebula. Director and writer of the film, Gunn, points out how there is no music during the entirety of this scene, which is very rare since both films are known for their soundtracks.

As she is firing this massive gun, Gunn points out an endearing reason for his idea behind this particular part. He says he saw actor Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) firing a huge gun in the movie Fast and Furious 7, and wanted to one-up that scene with Saldana. Which may explain why her gun is in fact, aggressively large.
